Trimellitic anhydride (TMA), also known as 1,2,4-trimellitic anhydride, or simply partial anhydride, is an important fine chemical product. increasingly expansive. Trimellitic anhydride has a wide range of uses:

(1) Preparation of trioctyl trimellitate

Trioctyl trimellitate (TOTM), which is produced by esterification of trimellitic anhydride and octanol, has good heat resistance, low volatility, oil resistance and processability, and is widely used as PVC heat-resistant plasticizer and anti-solvent. Plasticizer for cross-linked vinyl chloride resin, main plasticizer for 90°C and 105°C heat-resistant cable formulations, and supporting plasticizer for 6000V, 10000V high-voltage cables. In addition, it can also be used as impregnating agent and high temperature resistant insulating paint, widely used in the coating materials of electrical internal parts, automotive wires, semiconductors, etc.; used as automotive cables, moisture-proof and heat-resistant epoxy resin capsule components, anti-fog Polyethylene resin component and anhydrous dye component of fibers and thermoplastics; used as car seat cushions, artificial leather, washing machine drain hoses, blinds, sealing materials and fillers, etc.

(2) Preparation of polyamide-imide and polyester-imide

Polyamide-imide can be prepared by the reaction of trimellitic anhydride and aromatic diamine, and polyester imide can be prepared by the reaction of trimellitic anhydride, hydroquinone and 4,4'-diamine diphenol ether. They all have good heat resistance, electrical insulation resistance and mechanical properties, and also have good wear resistance at high temperatures. They are mainly used for insulation materials of F, H class motors, such as enameled wire paint, impregnating paint, silicon steel sheet Paint and film, etc., can be used for a long time at 230-250 ℃. In addition, it can be used to manufacture molded plastic parts such as electrical components, valves, bearings, jet engine parts, etc.

(3) Preparation of alkyd resin

Trimellitic anhydride reacts with polyols and dicarboxylic acids to produce alkyd resin coatings with excellent performance. Thermoplastic alkyd resins are mainly used as primers for automobiles, electrical appliances, and mechanical products. They can also be used as surface paints for kitchens, furniture, etc., as well as for industrial building materials and common paints. Room temperature curing resins are mainly used in industrial building materials and common paints.

(4) Others

Trimellitic anhydride can cure epoxy resin in a short time and make the cured epoxy resin have excellent physical and chemical properties. It is a cheap and practical curing agent. In addition, trimellitic anhydride can also be used to produce polyester resins and powder coatings, which are widely used in household appliances, bicycles, steel doors, windows and other places with high decorative and anti-corrosion requirements. Used as heat-resistant insulating laminates, synthetic dyes, heat-resistant varnishes, stabilizers, fiber softeners, pigments, water treatment agents, film films and surfactants, etc.
